On Mother’s Day, on May 9, 1906, Anna Jarvis’s mother tragically passed away in Philadelphia, leaving her deeply grief-stricken. She traveled far and wide, appealing to people from all walks of life and urging them to establish a formal Mother’s Day. Her call was met with an enthusiastic response. On May 10, 1913, both houses of the U.S. Congress passed a resolution, which President Wilson signed into law, designating the second Sunday in May each year as Mother’s Day.
